New inhabitants at the Butterfly Farm and on display in Minibeast Metropolis are a Chilean rose tarantula, Grammostola rosea and the giant prickly stick insect, Extatasoma tiaratum.
The Chilean rose tarantula is a typically tame and docile species of tarantula, best known for the lovely pink colouring to their body. They have tiny hair like barbs that can be used as defence by flicking the bristles at a predator causing an irritating, itching sensation!
The giant prickly stick insect also known as Macleay’s Spectre, originates from Australia. This type of stick insect is very well camouflaged and will curl its tail up over its body to mimic a scorpion, this helps to scare the predators away!
Throughout the summer holidays, in the Discovery Zone, 23rd July-3rd September 2018, children and adults can take part in twice daily ‘Meet the Mini-Beast’ handling sessions with one of our friendly education team members and hold creatures such as a Madagascan hissing cockroach, giant African millipede, African land snail and a variety of stick insects. There will be informative talks, throughout the holidays, for all the family about beetles, tailless whip scorpion and amazing leafcutter ant colony, now one of the largest in the UK!
Just in time for the summer holidays, Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm is delighted to announce that they have joined forces with local award-winning attractions, Shakespeare’s Schoolroom and The Mad Museum, to offer a ‘Family Super Saver’ ticket for two adults and up to two children. This fantastic value ticket at £57.00, allows entrance into all three attractions at one great price. Families may use the ticket for one visit to each attraction, with a month in which to use it.
There is plenty of room for picnics in the wildflower garden and Café on the Go will be in the garden all summer serving delicious hot drinks, milkshakes and snacks from their retro-style coffee bicycle.
Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly will be open throughout the summer including August Bank Holiday, from 10am until 6pm, last entry at 5.30pm
